The Eagle Gate monument is a historical monument seventy-six feet across, situated at the intersection of State Street at South Temple, adjacent to Temple Square.

The monument was erected in 1859 and commemorates the entrance to Brigham Young's property at the mouth of City Creek Canyon. It was originally topped by a wooden eagle, refurbished several times, and eventually replaced by the current 4,000-pound bronze eagle that has a wingspan of 20 feet.

The first Eagle Gate was remodeled and enlarged with new stone piers and wider inverted arches in the early 1890s. Due to the widening of State Street in the early 1960s, the prior monument was removed and replaced with a much wider and larger third generation Eagle Gate. The monument is one of Salt Lake City's most well known pioneer landmarks, and its current design is one of Salt Lake City's best standing examples of Mid-Century Modern design.

Directions: As you are brushing up on the history of Eagle Gate, you may want to look under the left hand side.

Notes: This is a replacement box! The first one went missing very soon after being planted. Stealth is essential! Please be sure to replace the box back in the corner (felt/magnet side on the bottom, lid on top) so it won't fall and be thrown away.

European-style bread, pastries, imported candy and other items... Vosen's has what you're looking for in an authentic German bakery. I love their breads, the apple pastries, the raspberry berliners... aw, heck. I just love anything they make! Fantastic little bakery (and I do mean little... you'll see when you go!) with a BIG taste.

Directions: Look to the west side of the porch steps.

Have you ever had a scone? I mean, an honest-to-goodness English scone? We're not talking about those deep-fried ...things... you can get. Elizabeth's Bakery has the most amazing scones you've tasted, I bet. (I personally love the cranberry-orange ones!) Not only are the scones to die for, so is pretty much about everything else they make. Don't forget to get the lemon curd for your scone!

Directions: Park and walk towards the road. There's a cute little stone bench there that has something interesting underneath on the southwest inside part of one of the legs. Please rehide completely with the little rocks and make it look as natural as possible.

Standing before the directory on Social Hall Avenue, follow the mule deer tracks back to where it appears the deer took a drink of water. Ooh! Shiny penny!

Notes: This is a stamp only "box", for obvious reasons. (I might also suggest bringing a towel or paper towels along.) Please do NOT hunt this box on a Sunday when City Creek Center is closed! The security folks would be all over you in 1.3 seconds. Please have a ready story if you get approached by security (I dropped something, lost something, checking out the different plants living in City Creek, I thought I saw a bunch of fish, etc.)
