Temple Square

Temple Square is a ten acre complex located in the center of Salt Lake City, Utah, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Contained within Temple Square proper are the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake Tabernacle, Salt Lake Assembly Hall, the Seagull Monument and two visitors' centers.

Attracting 3 million to 5 million visitors a year, Temple Square is the most popular tourist attraction in Utah, bringing in more visitors than the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone National Park, or any of Utah's National Parks.

During the month of December, Temple Square turns aglow, with hundreds of thousands of lights adorning every tree on the grounds.

Directions:

South Visitors Center: Find the cut-away temple. South of it is a small room "A Modern Prophet Speaks on Families". The east wall of the room has a picture hung on it-- look behind the lower left hand side of the frame. There you will find The Founder.

North Visitors Center: Find The Christus. Exit the rotunda through the east door. Just up the ramp to your right is a room "God's Plan for His Family". Please look through the crack in the doors to see if a light is on, and then listen before entering to make sure there isn't a tour group inside at that moment. Be ready to stamp and go-- helpful missionaries will most likely poke their heads in if you're there too long. (Have a good excuse ready, like "I just wanted to find a quiet place to think for a minute" or similar works quite well.) In the first section you enter, look for the hidden dark grey rock in the crevice amidst the orange ones in the southeast section. There you will find Jesus Christ. Carefully return the stamp to its hiding spot so it blends in and hides in the shadow.

Notes: Only The Founder contains a logbook. I cannot stress enough that you be as discreet as possible while retrieving these. The grounds at Temple Square are meticulously maintained, and both of these boxes will be noticed if you do not replace them EXACTLY where found. Because of this, do NOT allow your children to be the ones to find the boxes! Adults, please take charge.

Be prepared to taste the most incredible buttercream frosting of your life. Not only is it tasty, it's what they DO with it that is the amazing thing. You will find the prettiest cupcakes and cakes at this shop. I have never seen floral frosting work like this anywhere but here. Simply beautiful. Besides frosting, they are well-known for their gingerbread and also the Raspberry Cream Cheese Tarts (which are these little delights one customer affectionately refers to as 'crack cookies').

Directions: In the southeast corner of the parking lot, there are 5 trees growing fairly close together. At the base of one of those trees, between the tree and the small cement wall, is a SPOR.

The Beehive House is one of the two official residences of Brigham Young, an early leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). The Beehive House gets its name from the Beehive sculpture atop the house. It was designed by Young's brother-in-law and architect of the Salt Lake Temple, Truman O. Angell, who later designed Young's other residence, the Lion House.

The Beehive house was constructed in 1854, two years before the Lion House. The Lion House is adjacent to the Beehive House, and both homes are one block east of the Salt Lake Temple and Temple Square on the street South Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is constructed of adobe and sandstone.

Young was a polygamist, and the Beehive House was designed to accommodate him and his wives and his children by them. As Young's family grew, the Lion House was built to accommodate them and became his official residence after its construction.

The Beehive House is connected by a suite of rooms to the The Lion House. This suite included Young's offices and his private bedroom where he died in 1877.

Directions: After admiring the beautiful gardens of the Beehive House, you can find a stamp on the west side of the house, near the connector area, under the window sill. Continue wandering west, and turn right between the Lion House and the Church Administration Building. You will start walking towards the Lion House Pantry, but will stop to sit at the first bench on your right. In the middle of the window sill, underneath, is another stamp.

So many neat things to find in City Creek Center! :)

Directions: South of the fountain, find Ice Spirit. You want to follow the right-hand end of Parallel Arc that points to a large L-shaped rock. Move the smaller flat rock away from the corner.

Notes: Please please PLEASE be very stealthy finding this box! There are very friendly security folks who are ever helpful. Bring a camera, a book, a journal....anything that can be used as a ready excuse. Rehide EXTREMELY well so others can have fun finding this box! IMPORTANT: the flat rock MUST be pushed back in place as far under the big rock as possible. The flat rock sits directly on the box, so don't fill in the area with smaller rocks and make it impossible to slide the flat rock back in place.

Sweet Tooth Fairy has a lovely selection of gourmet cupcakes and other delectable desserts. One of their specialties are what they call "cake bites"-- I particularly like the lemon or the mint ones. Sweet Tooth Fairy is famous for having won Food Network's "Cupcake Wars" in the spring of 2012. Stop in for something to appease your sweet tooth!

Of course I had to plant a box at Utah's very first gourmet cupcake bakery. Mini's has some amazing little cupcakes made from fresh, local ingredients. They also use applesauce as one of their sweeteners in the cupcakes! If you show up for lunch, they also offer some very tasty box lunches.

Directions: The white retaining wall to the south of the building has some regularly spaced holes. One of those holes doesn't look quite like the others...
